ASR Presenting with Pima Community College at HLC Conference in Chicago
March 26, 2018; Potomac, MD
ASR is pleased to partner with Pima Community College to offer a session at the annual Higher Learning Commission (HLC) conference in Chicago, April 6-9. John Van Weeren of ASR and Dr. Nicola Richmond of Pima will present “Turning an Institutional Challenge into an Opportunity to Radically Improve Use of Data” on Monday, April 9, at 11:15 a.m.
Pima faced a huge challenge in 2013 when the institution was placed on probation. Among the key findings were limited use of key performance indicators, issues with mission review, and lack of strategic planning. The team quickly realized that a data informed decision-making framework was imperative to addressing these deficiencies. Furthermore, this framework’s foundation required a comprehensive data warehouse and business intelligence system to support it. Since the timeline and internal skills did not allow for this to be completed in-house, Pima sought the expertise of a qualified, higher education focused consulting company.
Between 2014-2017, Pima, together with ASR, built an environment that transformed the use of data in support of Pima’s mission while addressing Criterion 1 and Criterion 5 of the accreditation report. We will discuss how a review of the mission and strategic plan informed data system requirements and helped the college work with data, technology, report, and visualization design. In addition, focus was placed on access to data for the college community that aligned with institutional metrics that could drill down to further detail levels of academic divisions and individual programs. Attendees will learn the challenges, lessons learned, and the techniques that worked well for different areas of improvement.
